Parent Workshops

Parent Workshops are designed to spread knowledge to the rest of the community by both the youth and the volunteers. Parents will be more likely to help the youth adopt new health strategies for their families and the community if they also understand the importance of the information.

Valerie, Curtis, and Carly began giving parent workshops during their stay in the community. The hygiene class covered ways to keep the house more free of germs, dental care, hand-washing, as well as community hygiene, such as keeping the streets clear of garbage, and using latrines or bathrooms instead of the open fields. Basic illness and first aid was also covered, focusing on diarrhea and the subsequent dehydration, respiratory infections, as well as treatment of burns and wounds. Finally the community was invited to learn about nutrition, which included a fun cooking demonstration of how to put a balanced meal together. This class also covered dehydration, since it is a common problem in San Francisco, causing fainting, headaches, and further agravates other illnesses.
